Sotogrande
Sotogrande comprises a 20 square kilometre stretch from the Mediterranean Sea, into the Sierra Almenaramountains. The town offers contrasting views of ocean, mountain, forests, green fairways, the Rock of Gibraltar and the North African Coastline. Sotogrande is fast becoming the place to be seen on the Costa del Sol, there is a distinct feeling of elegance and luxury about the place which makes for a very worthy visit. It is a quiet area based around a wonderful marina and several restaurants and bars to choose from. And it's also called the land of Polo!

Where is Sotogrande?


Sotogrande is located on the far left-hand side of the Costa del Sol just before Gibraltar after which the Costa del Luz begins, in the province of Cadiz. It is only 20 minutes from Gibraltar Airport and one hour and a half from Málaga International airport. See the location on our map of Sotogrande.

 

 

What to do?


Sotogrande Beaches 

 

Sotogrande has 12km of beaches and they are located close to where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean so the sea can be cooler than further up the Costa del Sol. 

 

The Cala Chullera beach in Sotogrande is a heavy sand beach that is divided into two zones by a rocky projection. It is located on the feet of the tower of Chullera. 

Their rock bottoms are excellent for diving and a very good place to go fishing.

Cala Manilva Beach in Sotogrande is a small beach of about ten meters length. Lowering the small one cut of about four meters of height by which we accede, the beach seems to be a wonderful stay to us. Nevertheless, once down, the panorama is quite depressive since it seems a sweepings garbage dump. 

The only that saves this beach is the sea; With having many submerged rocks, it is ideal to do snorkeling.

San Diego Beach in Sotogrande became his name from the urbanization that is in front of the beach. Between the beach and making noise, the N-340. There is not so frequent trafic on this highway, the beach has a virgin beach aspect, with great trees surrounding, if you look from the highway.

The beach El Cabrero to the outskirts of Torreguadiaro, is a brown sandy beach. Behind the beach, there is an enormous esplanade where usually one can park his car, motorbike and camping vehicle.

 

But, watch! Do not park your vehicle in the sand, since the Guarda Civil can give you a ticket for this.

Torreguadiaro Beach is a sandy beach with small stones. It is a zone of fishermen that you can see work in the environs. After them many seagulls roam trying hard to get some fish from the fishermen. 

The apartments of Sotogrande on the side, give the beach a contrast with the humility of Torreguadiario. It is worth to take a view to the port of Sotogrande. 

The only disturbing thing on this beach is the highway N-340, that is exactly behind the beach.

Playa del Puerto Beach is situated short before the port of Sotogrande, after the Guadiaro river. It is an extensive beach very attractive by his gray sand. What is worth the trouble is the urbanization in which the playa del puerto is located, Sotogrande. This one is one of the most luxurious urbanizations of Spain, in where we can find impressive houses. For the ones that are more into golf, you cannot leave without knowing the golf course of Valderrama, one of the most exclusive and luxurious fields of Europe.

On El Cucurucho beach you can find well-known personalities from the world of TV, the stage, etc, they may be seen taking a stroll along the beach.

 

There are two beach clubs: El Octógono and El Cucurucho. Both offer a wide range of beach-side facilities, including swimming pools, restaurants, activities for youngsters, together with reception rooms for cocktails, meetings, parties and even art exhibitions, with the result that relaxation can be easily combined with more active pursuits and entertainment.

 

During the summer months, local policemen will be patrolling the coast off Sotogrande and Torreguadiario beaches. San Roque Town Hall has acquired a vessel for these purposes, which has been fully fitted with the most advanced technological equipment.

Sotogrande Golf, Polo and Other Sports 

 

Sotogrande is famous for its golf courses and polo fields, tennis, paddle, and sailing are also in abundance. Sotogrande can offer golf fanatics two of the best courses in Europe - the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, Club de Golf La Canada, La Reserva de Sotogrande, Almenara hotel-golf, the San Roque Club and Alcaidesa links golf course.The beautiful climate makes for perfect golfing conditions pretty much all year round.

 

Sotogrande is also a paradise for polo lovers. The Santa María Polo Club and the Ayala Polo Club are some of the most established and affluent clubs in Sotogrande. The annual polo event (El Torneo Internacional) held in August at The Santa Maria Polo Club, is also important for tourism as it attracts many rich and famous people from all over the world which of course boosts Sotogrande's reputation.

 

Also Sotogrande Equestrian Centre is one of the best and well know horse riding schools in Spain

Sotogrande Marina


Sotogrande’s famous marina has beautiful pedestrian pathways filled with trendy boutiques, boating shops, up-market estate agents, restaurants, elegant bars, and even an ice cream parlour. Built in the late 70s, this marina has become iconic on the coast and offers all the facilities one expects when docking a boat. These amenities include electricity, fresh water, telephone line, television cables, and 24 hour security. To complete the marina there are ample dry-dock facilities and provisions for activities such as jet-skiing. The Puerto Deportivo (Sports Marina) has two paseos running around it; Paseo del Rio and Paseo de Levante. The sailing club is located on the Levante side, along with the information office and post office. The Rio Guadiaro empties into the sea at Sotogrande.

Sotogrande Spa & Beauty

 

For those concerned about keeping up with appearances there are many beauty salons in the area offering every beauty treatment on the planet. The most luxurious is the Almenara Gym and Spa at Hotel Almenara, which is located at the top of Sotogrande. This spa has an indoor pool, steam baths, massage, sauna and gym.

Arguably the most popular retail centre is Blue Sotogrande, which opened in 2009 on the frontline of the marina. As well as the high-end fashion boutiques offering the latest collections, shoes, handbags, lingerie, perfumes, children’s clothing and accessories, the centre includes cafés and bars, a hair and beauty salon, a jewellery shop and an upmarket delicatessen. The marina also hosts a weekly street market and car boot sale each Sunday morning.

Many of those who stay in Sotogrande, me included, use the opportunity to drive across the border onto the tax haven of Gibraltar for a spot of VAT-free shopping. Remember, queues to leave in the late afternoon can be long – and you’ll need your passport and pounds, of course.

 

 

Sotogrande Real Estate


In terms of living space, the modern urbanisations that comprise most of Sotogrande all offer spacious and modern properties that might not be the most affordable on the coast, but are certainly among the most stylish. Expat families will be interested to note that the Sotogrande International School admits 3-18 year olds, and the Centro de Salud Hospital is just a short drive away in Estepona.

 

Regulars and inhabitants of Sotogrande include Peter Caruana, Chief Minister of Gibraltar, Tony Blair, José María Aznar, Emilio Botín, Ana Rosa Quintana,Royal Shakespeare Company actor Mike Gwilym,and HRH Prince Louis Alphonse of Bourbon, the legitimist pretender to the throne of France.

The best places to eat in Sotogrande is at the beautiful Marina, where excellent fish and meat dishes are offered.

 

 

Sotogrande Nightlife


Sotogrande is not known for intense nightlife, instead it is more relaxed. Many residents and tourists enjoy long sumptuous dinners and drinks in the marina at night.

 

 

Sotogrande Things To Do

 

Just a short walk from Sotogrande, via a boardwalk alongside a lagoon, is the newly promenaded Torreguadiaro. As the name suggests it is the location of one of the many towers(torres) built between the 15-18th centuries to provide vantage points to warn the locals from Barbary pirates. In fact Torreguadiaro has two torres, the first and newest is a rather grand affair visible from the boardwalk whilst the second, older, torre is gently crumbling at the western end of the promenade.

 

It has taken Torreguadiaro two thousand years to develop as far as it has today. A large car park was built at one end of the promenade at the same time that now also serves as the location for the weekly market. There are about twelve restaurants in this small village each has its own speciality, for example traditional Spanish, modern Italian, Indian and International and of course different bars. Dolce Vita Restaurant is on the main street and is a favourite spot for Sunday lunch.
