How to Travel Marbella?


By car: Carretera nacional 340, Autovia del Mediterraneo y Autopista de la Costa del Sol, e-7 (peaje)

By plain: The nearest airport is the Internacional Airport Pablo Ruíz Picasso (Malaga), a 45 kms.

By train: The nearest station is in Fuengirola (27 kms.). Other possibility to travel Marbella is the station of Malaga (57 km)

Marbella History

 

Marbella is rich in history, and was heavily influenced by the Moorish occupation of the coast (and the rest of Spain) of nearly 800 years. The Moors primarily settled in the southern region of Spain(Andalucia), leaving behind breathtaking monuments that are worth a visit. In Marbella’s old town, you can find the famous castle walls (Murallas del Castillo) and light houses (Las Torres Almenaras) which are strategically located all along the coast, near what were then influential Moorish villages. A large Roman community once thrived in what is now, Marbella´s old town (El Casco Antiguo), and were responsible for building recently discovered historic monuments such as La Muralla and Los Tres Capiteles Jónicos. Experts are still amazed how it maintained its Roman architecture during the moorish occupation. In Roman times, the city was called "Salduba" (Salt City), but the name Marbella is derived from Marbil-la and dates back to Islamic era. 

 

In the 1940s, Marbella was a small jasmine-lined village with only 900 inhabitants. But this changed when Prince Max Egon zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg and his heir Alfonso de Hohenlohe experienced a problem with their Rolls-Royce in the vicinity. Alfonso fell in love with Marbella right from the start and decided to buy land commercially, marketing the area as a tourist destination. In 1954, he opened the famous Marbella Club Hotel. Given Alfonso's maternal membership in Spain's titled aristocracy and his paternal kinship to the royal courts of Europe, the hotel became a hit among Europe's ruling elites such as Don Jaime de Mora y Aragón, a Spanish bon vivant, brother to Fabiola, Queen of the Belgians, Adnan Khashoggi, Guenter Rottman, Gunilla von Bismarck. However, problems arose in 1987 when Melodie Nakachian, a daughter of Raymond Nakachian, a local billionaire philanthropist and the Korean singer Kimera was kidnapped, putting the city in the focus of the media.

 

 

Marbella Beaches

 

Marbella coastline has a wide verity of beaches for all tastes and ages, where you can usually find good space to soak up the sun and relax. Some of the most notable stretches are Puerto Banús, Río Verde, El Ancon and Nagüeles Beach and they all have good facilities, plenty of beach bars and parking. Marbella is home to world-famous beach clubs and quaint chiringuitos. Whether you fancy enjoying local fresh fish while curling your toes in the ocean or sipping a delicious cocktail in an exclusive beach club, Marbella has it all.

 

Nagüeles Beach

 

Nagüles Beach (on the picture) situated on the Golden Mile next to the Marbella Club and Puente Romano Hotels. It is 800m long and 50m wide accessed by the promenade. It is a tourist beach offering water sports including windsurfing, jet skiing, pedalos, etc. This beach has showers and public toilets, waste paper bins, vigilance towers, life saving and first aid equipment, as well as being watched over by life guards in the summer season.

 

La Fontanilla Beach

 

La Fontanilla Beach is next to the Leisure Port in Marbella offering pedalos, sun beds and parasols and beach restaurants.

 

El Faro Beach

 

El Faro Beach is west of the Leisure Port in the very centre of Marbella. It is 300 m long and 35 m wide with a high occupation level. There are two beach restaurants as well as free children's games on the beach.

 

La Venus Beach

 

La Venus Beach is close to the Marbella Sports Port with three beach restaurants with sun beds, as well as free children's games on the beach.

 

La Bajadilla Beach

 

La Bajadilla Beach is close to the fishing port. It is 700 m long and 35 m wide with three beach restaurants with sun beds.

 

Trocadero Playa

 

Trocadero Playa, located in Playa Santa Petronila of Marbella’s promenade, is a great example of a long established chiringuito with parasols, televisions, a huge wooden bar and a mouth-watering menu. Marbella Family Fun

 

Family fun beaches - Funny Beach is located near the entrance arch to Marbella (km 184) and there you will find a typical sunbathing beach as well as jet skis, banana boats, wind surfing, trampolines, miniature golf, bouncy attributes and even an arcade equipped with a mechanical bull!)

 

 

Marbella What To Do?

 

Marbella Paseo Maritimo or the Promenade

You can take a walk along the Marbella Sea Front where all along the Golden Mile are shops cafes and restaurants and also the Plaza del Mar Shopping Complex which hosts Supersol Supermarket, a number of Cafes, Gymnasium and Cinema.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

If you really love walking then you could even

walk all the way into Puerto Banus, which is

 

approximately six kilometers. A striking white marble pathway stretches along two kilometers of it (Avenida del Mar) and this ‘Ocean Avenue’ is a perfect place to cycle, run, practice exercise on one of the work-out machines provided by the local government. And all this also during the winter, because temperatures rarely fall below 15º. 

 

 

 

Marbella features two important ports, one in the middle of the town dedicated to fishing and sporting activities (Puerto Deportivo) and another, world-famous one Puerto Banús, named after José Banús, which is the home to many luxurious yachts and boutiques.

 


Marbella old town


Marbella's old town centres around the charming Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Square), with beautiful trees and exotic tropical plants, which features a wide variety of traditional Spanish and modern international restaurants. The charming fountain in the Orange square was built in 1604 and the famous square is also home to the original town hall, built in 1572. It is well known for its beautiful Mudejar-style door with detailed coat-of-arms and inscriptions.  The charming maze of tiny streets in the old town is filled with rich history and is divided into two mayor areas, el Barrio Alto and el Barrio Nuevo. Other important roman landmarks in Marbella are the Vaults (Las Bóvedas), the ‘Villa Romana de Rio Verde’, ‘Basilica Vega del Mar’, and the Church of the Incarnation (Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnación).

 

The old town is always lively and filled with small picturesque café’s, bistros and Spanish football bar’s and it's a hub of activity day and night. The narrow streets are lined with stately buildings and charming typical Spanish property, small shops, art galleries, boutiques selling everything from Moroccan rugs to summer sandals and designer names such as Versace, Gucci, Hugo Boss and Escada is to be found. If you leave the old town and get to Marbella´s main street, Ricardo Soriano there you can find much more of everything.

 

 

Marbella shopping


One can visit Avenida Ramon y Cajal in Marbella city center to find luxury brands such as Burberry, Bvulgari, Cartier as well as Spanish high street shops. If none of that takes your fancy make your way to the old town and get lost in the maze of gorgeous streets and plazas full of boutiques. There is also a local weekly street market every Monday from 9-2 pm at the fair site (Las Albarizas area). This quaint and long established mercadillo sells handmade jewellery, food and clothes.

One can get lost for hours in the epic shopping centre La Cañada. Situated just off the CN340 at the junction for Ojén, it is one of the largest shopping complexes on the coast and has over 150 shops.

 

For those with a more expensive and sophisticated taste try the El Corte Inglés, Spain’s largest department store chain, which is situated in Puerto Banús. It offers absolutely everything from luxury brand clothing and cosmetics to music, movies, portable & household electronics, furniture, hardware, books, groceries, gourmet food, cars and even a travel agency. 

 

 

Marbella sport


This Andalucian city promotes healthy living and an active lifestyle and that is why one can find sport facilities everywhere and thanks to the great weather, one can practice sports all year round. In the municipal sport centre, Polideportivo Municipal Paco Santos, which is located on Avenida Cánovas del Castillo in the centre of Marbella, you can practice tennis, swimming, football, badminton, as well as other sports for a minimal fee.

Hotel Puente Romano also offers an exclusive sporting facilities. Also a private golf course, tennis and paddle facilities that host world-class matches!

People love Marbella for its nightlife. There's something for every age whether you´re 18 or 80. We have often been to clubs where the whole family has been there, from the grandchildren to the grandparents. Its actually really nice to see.

 

 

Marbella travel guide

 

By car - use the Autovía (CN340 or A7) a toll-free dual carriageway following the coastline. This is the most important road in the area running from one end of the Costa del Sol all the way to Cádiz. Many exits from this road, lead directly into Marbella centre.

 

By bus - There are lots of bus stops in Marbella and the service is fairly regular. Don't be afraid of not speaking Spanish, most of the people in Marbella speak basic English. For longer bus travels use the Marbella’s main bus station, the Portillo on Avenida del Trapiche, near the shopping centre La Cañada. A very regular bus transfer service runs between Málaga airport and Marbella bus station, lasting only 45 minutes and costing €4.35???
