Manilva
Manilva is a municipality that is located on the coast at the southwesternmost edge of the Spanish province of Málaga on its border with the province of Cádiz in southern Andalusia.(map) The municipality covers an area of 35 square km and about 17,000 full time residents and a further 14,000 who reside here on a temporary basis or have holiday homes.  

 

 

 

 

 

Manilva

 

There are three main centres of population: The main town of Manilva which is approx. 2 km inland; the coastal village of San Luis de Sabinillas (referred to as Sabinillas and the white village); and the small fishing village of Castillo de la Duquesa (referred to as Castillo) about 1.75 km to the west. Apart from these, there are numerous urbanisations, including the sporting marina of Puerto de la Duquesa, all of which are turning Manilva into a bustling coastal town. Because it is simple and unpretentious, Manilva is often overlooked. Although a healthy growing village tourists tend to give it a miss as they rush south on the coast road which does not pass through the village.

 

 

What To Do?

 

Manilva beaches


Manilva is blessed with 8 km of coastline ranging from rocky coves to broad sweeping beaches, which are kept clean throughout the year, and during the summer months are patrolled by a team of lifeguards and medics. Starting at Punta Chullera in the Southwest here are descriptions of each of Manilva's beaches:

 

Punta Chullera: This is a small rocky cape at the extreme western end of the municipality and the small cove at the mouth of the arroyo* Calataraje is the boundary with the municipality of San Roque in the province of Cadiz. This rocky shore has shallow waters which are clear and clean and are home to an abundace of sea life including octopus and sea urchins (bathers beware). Adjacent to Punta Chullera, and extending into the municipality of San Roque, is the popular Playa de la Chullera.

*An arroyo is a river which only runs during rainy periods.

 

Playa de los Toros: This small cove is a lovely quiet spot, bordered by rocky outcrops either side and is about 100m wide and consists of a fine shingle (shell).

The beach can be reached, from the Malaga bound carriageway of the coast road, by taking the sliproad immediately before the pedestrian bridge at Punta Chullera and following the road to the end. You will also find the Sal y Sol chiringuito on this beach.

 

Playa del Gobernador (Las Arenas - The Sands): This beach is 850 metres in length and 30 metres wide and accessed from the Playa Paraiso Urbanisation or from the Venta de Asfalto just before the Paraiso roundabout from the Malaga bound carriageway.

 

Cala de la Sardinia: Sardine Cove is a small beach of 150m in length nestled between two groups of rocks and runs adjacent to the 'Playa Paraiso' urbanisation between Playa del Gobernador and Playa de Tubalitas.

 

Playa de Tubalitas (El Negro): This beach, whose 650m run from the Cala de la Sardina to the Arroyo Negro, is bordered by the smooth hills typical of this end of the municipality, and is well known as a passage for tuna fish and used to be the location for networks of 'tunny nets' used to catch these fish.

 

El Negro (Los Toros): Named locally after the bulls which exited the adjacent Canada Real (Royal gorge) en route to Estepona from Los Barrios. It is the longest beach in Manilva and for more than half of it has no buildings by it. The beach runs from the Aroyo Negro up to the arroyo del Indiano just to the west of Castillo.

 

La Duquesa (Playas Castillo and Duquesa): Extending from the arroyo del Indiano to the the arroyo de la Penuela, the 1150m beach includes the village of Castillo and the Blue Flag marina of Puerto de la Duquesa and ranges from rocky outcrops at the Castillo end to wide sandy bays either side of the Marina. This beach was awarded a blue flag in 2005 and it is a popular bathing spot and has three chiringuitos (beach bar/restaurants) and in the summer various water sports and activities are available on the Sabinillas side of the Marina.

 

Sabinillas/La Colonia: Running between the Port of Duquesa and the Rio Manilva this 1650m Blue Flag beach runs in front of the entire town of Sabinillas and the Unicaja Summer School (Colonia Infantil). The beach is a popular recreation area and its western end is also still used by local fisherman. The central parts of the beach have all sorts of beach activities set out during the summer such as volleyball and children's play areas and you will find pedallo hire from some of the chiringuitos. A nice touch on this beach is the deliberate planting of palms and heat resistant shrubs in small planted areas that provide welcome shade. More shade and refreshments can be obtained at our beach bars. To Get There: Park anywhere in Sabinillas and head for the paseo.

 

 

Manilva restaurants


What really typifies Manilva’s gastronomy is its fish and seafood. There is no dish more emblematic of the coast of Malaga than fresh sardines roasted on bamboo spits over a wood fire on the beach and this you must try when you travel there. Alongside Manilva’s traditional bars and restaurants are a whole host of international hostelries offering the opportunity to sample the cuisines of India, China, Germany, Holland, Italy, Britain, Mexico, Argentina, amongst many others. It is this that makes Manilva such a delightful place to dine out, whether it be on the harbourside in Puerto Duquesa, on the promenade in Sabinillas, or in one of Manilva town’s street cafés.

 

 

Sights

 

The Mediterranean coast of the Costa del Sol is a unique archaeological site, ensuring Manilva a great amount of historical monuments and a very interesting touristic circuit.

  • Manilva Old Town: The Old Town of Manilva is located about 2 km inland and surrounded by vineyards producing the famous Moscatel wine. The town’s most important monument is the parish church of Santa Ana.
  • Parish church of Holy Ana – Manilva: It is located at the Plaza de la Iglesia and is known to be the most important religious monument in the area of Manilva. Its construction took from the 17th to the 18th century and was built over a historic temple of the 16th century. It includes three naves, transept, presbytery and registry.
  • Villa Matilda – Manilva: Villa Matilde in the city centre of Manilva is used as headquaters for the tourism office Manilva. It was owned by Ignacio Infante, brother of Blas Infante. Recently the whole building has been restored and now inside you can admire an exhibition of roman remains found in the surroundings.
  • Castillo de la Duquesa: Castillo Duquesa is also known as Castillo de Sabanillas due to its location at the beach of the same name. In past times a roman settlement was located on the very same place. It included thermal baths, a necropolis and an area for salting. In the 18th century the castle was built over the remains of the roman walls. Its purpose was the defense of the local population and coast against raiding pirates. Over the years the castle has been used as fortification, headquarters of the border police and headquarters of the Guardia Civil. The site’s surrounding has been declared Zona Arqueológica de Interés Cultural (archaeological site of cultural interest).
  • Archaeological sites: In the whole are of Manilva a great number of archaeological sites have been detected. One of the most interesting ones is Villa Romana de la Barriada Sabinillas whose remains were used in the construction of the Castillo de la Duquesa. This settlement even counted with a thermal sulfur bath. Another important archeological excavation is Cerro del Castillo.
  • Archeological excavation – Villa Romana de Sabinillas: The site of Villa Romana de Sabinillas is located next to La Barriada de Sabinillas.
  • Archeological excavation – Cerro del Castillo: The site of Cerro del Castillo is to be found between the two streams of Alcorrín and Martagina. Here you can admire some remains from the Bronze Age.
  • Marina La Duquesa: La Duquesa is the area’s the most lively tourist center and boasts with lots of bars, restaurants, shops and everything a navigator needs. In it’s surroundings you find lots of urbanizations, hotels and an excellent golf course. 
  • Torres Almenadas: In the area of Manilva we find the remains of two pinnacle towers (solo adivinando), Torre Almenada de la Duquesa and Torre Almenada Punta Chullera. Both dating back to the 15th century when they served to protect the population from the frequent pirate attacks.
  • El Ingenio Chico: El Ingenio Chico is one of the two sugar refineries built under the Duke of Arcos. It dates back to the 17th century and today some parts of the factory and walls still exist, as well as the aqueduct used to transport water to the machinery.
  • Cueva Rupestre Gran Duque: This cave is located in the gorge of Canuto de la Utrera. Some Prehistorian remains have been found inside.
  • Charca de la Mina: Some Roman and Mediaeval remains have been found at this site.

 

The roman baths (FOR KIDS ALSO!): For something a little different, and certainly something the kids will be able to boast about with their friends, take them for a dip at the Roman Baths. There are traces of other water channels nearby that suggest the complex was once much bigger and a few metres downstream there is an aqueduct also of Roman origin. There is also a legend that Julius Caesar cured himself of a skin complaint by bathing here whilst he was governor of Southern Spain between 63 and 60 BC. Remarkably the baths are still usable and are popular with Spanish families on Sundays. They picnic alongside the river and let their children splash around in the warm spring waters.

 

 

Manilva Ferias/Fiestas


Like all Spanish towns and cities, Manilva has an annual feria or fair, which is held in the second week of August, to coincide with Spain’s national holiday, Ascension Day on the 15th August.

 

In fact Manilva has a very busy calendar of ferias and fiestas either religious, traditional or modern. Starting off with the Three Kings cavalcade on the 5th January, then the raucous fun of Carnaval around the beginning of Lent; the solemn devotion of the Semana Santa processions during Easter; the Manilva International Festival, around the end of May, during which the municipality’s international community takes the opportunity to show off its varying culture, cuisine and traditions; the Eve of San Juan during the summer solstice with its pagan tradition of bonfires, fireworks and partying till dawn; the fishermen’s celebration of their patron, the Virgen del Carmen in mid-July, and then rounding off the summer with the Vendimia, in the first weekend of September, which is a festival celebrating Manilva’s grape harvest. Throw into that a good smattering of Saints’ days and pilgrimages and you’ve got a busy schedule of celebrations.

 

 

Manilva golf and other sports


Manilva is a wonderful area to enjoy a variety of activities for the whole family - golf, water sports, sporting activities, horse riding and there is always loads of things to do and fun events for children. The natural beauty and varied landscape in Manilva and the surrounding area lend the Costa del Sol to being a Mecca for most land and water based activities.

 

Manilva has the La Duquesa Golf Club, which opened in the late ‘70s and the course wraps itself around the El Hacho hill, and has stunning views of the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and the North African coast.

Along with Duquesa there are a large number of quality courses within a 30 minute drive including the world famous Valderrama, home of the Andalucia Masters, and Finca Cortesin home of the Volvo World Match Play Championships.
