Benahavis - Dining room of Costa del Sol Benahavis is a Spanish mountain village situated between Marbella, Estepona, and Ronda, where it is located seven kilometers from the coast. Renowned for its restaurants, it is often called the dining room of the Costa del Sol. Benahavis holds nine of the 70 golf courses in the Costa del Sol.

Location

 

Located on the southern face of La Serrania de Ronda mountain range, Benahavis is one of the most mountainous village on the western Costa del Sol. Benahavis is situated near the beaches of the Costa del Sol and spectacular mountains of the Serrania de Ronda. Its terrain is traversed by the Rivers Guadalmina, Guadaiza, and Guadalmanza. Regions of great natural and historic interest are to be found within its boundaries, such as El Cerro del Duque, Daidin, and the Montemayor Castle.

The town itself is surrounded by natural parkland, and, as such, retains a modicum of its secluded, cosy feel. La Zagaleta, a highly exclusive mansion club which contributes to Benahavis' status as the richest municipality per capita in Andalucía, lies within its boundaries, and overlooks the village. During the late 1990s, the Junta de Andalucia constructed a dam on the site of an old marble quarry, meaning that for much of the year, the once ever-flowing Rio Guadalmina is merely a dried-up river bed.

 

 

Benahavis Things To Do

 

Places of great natural interest are to be found within its boundaries, such as El Cerro del Duque, Daidin, Las Maquinas, El Charco de las Mozas and La Leche reservoir. Further south there are luxury housing estates, golf courses and other tourist facilities, the result of the area's significant development. The village still retains a few features of its origins as a white Arabic village, forming a sharp contrast with the colour of the surrounding mountains. Monuments of interest are Montemayor Castle and a former 16th-century palace. 

The leisure opportunities that this white village offers are numerous: from an excursion to one of the Natural Interest Monuments of Malaga province, like the spot known as "Las Angosturas", to walk to the Fuente del Moro (the Moor´s fountain), the Charca de los Novios (the pond of the lovers) or the Charca de las Mozas (the girl's pond). Other must visit places are the Montemayor castle, the Daidin ruins and the parish church of our Lady of the Rosary. At any time of the year, Benahavis is an enchanting place that never disappoints the visitors.

 

 

Shopping

 

Where the Benahavis village offers you the possibility to get most things you need, the main supermarkets and shopping malls are near the coast, close to the N340. Various supermarkets on the way to Estepona, such as Supersol, Mercadona and Carrefour, shopping centre La Colonia and various interior design shops on the entrance to San Pedro de Alcantara, and the new industrial zone at the bottom of the Ronda road, where you can find everything for DIY or building and interiors. In Puerto Banus you can walk around in the exclusive designer boutiques, one of the shopping malls or Spain´s biggest mega store, El Corte Ingles. The biggest mall of them all is just on the far side of Marbella, called La Cañada, and you will find absolutely everything here, although not necessarily at the best price.

If you go shopping outside mega stores, remember the Spanish like their siesta, so they will close for a couple of hours at 2PM.

Benahavis Restaurants

 

Eating and drinking are important social happenings in Spain and you will find a very enjoyable atmosphere in the restaurants in Benahavis. Benahavis is called the dining room of the Costa del Sol, and for a good reason. The village centre is literally full of them. Most serve typically Spanish cuisine, although you will also find Italian food, Indian curries, and more elaborate Spanish and French cuisine. All restaurants will offer you a very good value for money, and really large portions. It is probably the reason they all do well. The best one we recomment is La Torre de Benahavis. Excellent service and quality of food and the owner is always there!

 


Bars

 

Bars in Benahavis are a joy for the palate, as well as being amongst the coziest on the Costa del Sol. You have the choice between traditional tapa bars, British orientated bars or late night venues. Breakfast is served in Canela and Donde Kike, whilst Canela serve a good value-for-money lunch. El Ambiente specializes in international and Thai food in the evenings. The Spanish Arch does typical Irish pub grub, and Villa Josefa and Donde Kike serve all kind of tapas and portions.

 

 

Benahavis Golf and Other Sports

 

Boasting 12 of the Costa del Sol's 70 golf courses, and that will go up to 15 in the next couple of years, it is also THE hotspot for golf lovers.  And with 320 sunny days days per year, golf is played all year round under blue skies in Benahavis. It is therefore not unusual to play in polo shirts in the middle of "winter". The golf courses in Benahavis - which are all spectacular - were all designed by renown golf architects, such as Robert Trent Jones or great champions like Severiano Ballesteros or Jack Nicklaus. Courses are all rather hilly, and one obliges you to go round with a buggy.  If your not in good shape, we would advise you to take a buggy anyway when going for a round of golf.

This is a great time to get on the course for cheap, and if you're a fan of free poker, pitch-and-putt, or any sport you can enjoy for less, then it's a worthwhile time to visit.  The low season on the Costa del Sol is not winter, but July and August, since that is when it gets really warm, so the greenfees go down considerably during this period. Do remember to take plenty of golf balls as well, as some golf courses are not at all forgiving.

History

 

Its name appears to be derived from the Berber tribe of Banu Habis, who settled in the area. Montemayor Castle, built near the village during the Moslem occupation, was an important military enclave due to its unquestionable strategic value, as from the spot on which the fortress once stood, now home only to ruins, over one hundred kilometres of coastline are visible and the relief of North Africa can be seen. 

In the 11th century, the fortress and the territory it controlled were caught up in the struggle between the governing Malaga dynasty, the Edrisitas and the Hammudies, lords of Algeciras.  In 1273, the king of Granada, Mohamed, seeing his throne to be in jeopardy, requested help from the Benimerines, who, as they advanced across the peninsula, occupied Marbella, Montemayor Castle and Malaga. 

The village was conquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1485, after the fall of Marbella, which, along with Benahavis, was ceded to Don Juan de Silva, Count of Cifuentes, in 1492, in return for his support in the capture of Granada.  In 1572, King Philip II awarded Benahavis its own municipal charter, thus granting the village independence from Marbella.
